What Child is This PartA Tab - Intermediate Fingerstyle:

This classic Christmas piece was originally one that I arranged for the Classical Guitar, but have since adapted it for fingerstyle guitar. Please note that the same song is called Greensleeves and can be played very easily year around. There is only one note that changes from the Christmas song to Greensleeves. Check out some of the TAB books at the bottom of this page too. There are some great instructional materials available for you to propel you fingerstyle to the next level.

Fingerstyle Christmas GuitarFingerstyle Christmas Guitar: Mark Hanson is a great fingerstyle guitarist and this book of Christmas Songs demonstrates that fact. If you are just starting out with fingerstyle guitar this book may be a little deep for you. There are 12 songs and they are divided into 4 beginner tunes, 4 intermediate and 4 advanced. All are richly transcribed and you definitely learn a lot from this book!

Twelve beautiful new arrangements for solo acoustic guitar. Including: Angels We Have Heard on High * The First Noel * Go Tell It on the Mountain * Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas * In Dulce Jubilo * It Came Upon a Midnight Clear * Joy to the World * Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence * O Come Little Children * O Little Town of Bethlehem * Silent Night * Winter Wonderland.

PartA

What Child is This PartA Tab: The first half of What Child is This is a very straight forward arrangement that I have transcribed for you. As I mentioned in the intro, I originally played this on the Classical Guitar, but it sounds really great on the Acoustic Guitar, played in fingerstyle fashion too.

The most important suggestion that I can give you is to be sure to hold the chord forms as long as you can, to allow the notes to ring through each other in harp-like fashion. If some of the LH fingering seems a bit unconventional, you will understand once you hold the chords in place. Also on the 2, 3 and 4 note chords, try not to play them all together as a 'pinch' (the pinch is when you pick with the thumb and fingers at the same time in a pinch-like fashion). Try to roll these chords just a bit. Start with the thumb, then the next finger and then the next. It will take a bit of work to make it sound smooth, but once you do, it is a very beautiful effect.

PartB

What Child is This PartA PartB Tab: The second part of What Child is this is the Chorus of the song. Again, it is a very straight-forward arrangement. While the PartA or the Verse is played mostly in A Minor, the PartB or the Chorus dips briefly into the Major key of C for a bit and then reverts back to the Relative key of A Minor.

Memorize Your Ultimate Guitar Tab:

Interested in memorizing your songs? Want to obtain additional material as to how to do this effortlessly? The easiest way to memorize a song is to memorize one small section or one measure at a time. Master each small segment prior you move on to the next measure. Always return to the beginning of the section you are memorizing and then append the new measure to it.

It is very important that once you have the entire piece memorized, you play it through several more times.
