Features: 10.0

The Taylor 814CE is one of their top-of-the-line guitar and it shows. it. This is a REALLY great sounding guitar. How do you compare it with say a Martin D28? Hard to say other that the sound of the Taylor 814CE is different. It is well balanced (much more than the Martins), but still very comparable and alluring.

This guitar is a fingerstyle guitarists dream. As with all upper-end Taylor guitars, they make incredible fingerstyle guitars, which do not have an overpowering bass and nice clear treble range. When you have combined passages of both bass and treble, one does not overpower the other - very very nice.

The Taylor will cut through other instruments in a band with a strong clear voice. Fishman pickup system that comes standard on the guitar, is in my estimation the best system out there. My only beef is with the rather short battery life.

The Taylor 814CE has Incredible detail, nicely appointed with abalone trim and those beautiful solid back and side sets, set this guitar apart as extremely well done and not over-done.

Taylor has their production methods systems extremely well executed and guitars coming out of their facility are very consistent. No worries on buying this on sight unseen.

Sound Production: 9.5

As mentioned above, the guitar has a very nice balance between treble, mids and bass. Great for either fingerstyle or flatpick styles. I do however favor Taylor's for fingerstyle.

Dan Crary has played Taylor Acoustics for years and can get incredible sound from them. Check out some of his music HERE.

Action: 9.5

Action is great, just as it comes from the factory. No adjustments needed. Nut and saddle actions were perfect as was the intonation - to be expected of a guitar in this price range.

Durability: 10.0

Rock solid, durable guitar. Taylor has developed the best lacquer finish in the industry after 30 years in the business. Looking inside the guitar, it just has "well built" written all over it.

This guitar was put together in a humidity controlled atmosphere and you should keep it in that same type of atmosphere to minimize cracking or wood movement. A good humidifier for your room or home and guitar case is essential to minimize repair bills.

Be sure to visit our page on Guitar Humidity Control for detail information of keeping your guitar in tip-top shape during the dry winter months.

Customer Service: 10.0

Be sure to register your Taylor 814CE. If you treat your guitar right you will be able to keep it in great playing condition for a long time. The biggest enemy of a hollow body acoustical guitar is the lack or the excess of humidity in the air. If you develop problems, a Taylor repair center will take care of you.

Overall Score: 9.8

The Taylor 814CE is an excellent choice for those of you wishing to move up to a pro-style guitar. The fit and finish is one of the best in the industry and sound in exceeded only by some fine hand-made acoustic guitars.

The solid Sitka Spruce top and solid East Indian Rosewood back and sides make this a top of the line acoustic guitar for the aspiring student and the seasoned professional as well. You will enjoy playing both fingerstyle and flatpick style guitar on this one.

Sound better than a Martin? Strictly a matter of taste. In my estimation just as good but "different". Finish is perfect as are the details, making a guitar you will be proud to show off.

I love the Fishman electronics which I think are the best in the business. I installed a Fishman in my own handmade acoustic guitar because of the superior sound, control and natural sounding output.

I would put Taylor 814CE on my must-have list. It is that good.
