Features: 7.0

With a street price of around $360.00, it's hard to beat the features and sound of the Seagull S6 acoustic guitar.

The Seagull S6 boasts such features as a solid Canadian Cedar top and Laminated Black Cherry back and sides, which is almost unheard of in this price range. With most guitar manufacturers you don't get out of the plywood top, until you approach the $600.00 to $1,000.00 mark.

What I really like about the solid wood used on the top of this guitar is that this guitar will improve with age, unlike similar models made from plywood. This alone brings a smile to my face as you know that this guitar will just keep on improving in sound as it gets older and dries out a bit.

Another thing I love about Seagulls and the Seagull S6 is the care and quality they put into the top bracing's. Again, very important for not only initial should but the bracing helps improve the quality of sound as the guitar ages.

The Seagull S6 basically have the dreadnought form with the exception of the slightly rounder shoulders. It is kind of like a Martin D18 crossed with a Gibson J45 body shapes.

Sound Production: 7.5

Iv' e got to admit it. This guitar has a sound approaching a guitar that is at least 2 times it's street value - easy.

The people at Seagull, which is a French Canadian company by the way, really put together a fine produce here and to classify this a beginner guitar is almost a slap in the face.

The price certainly says beginner, but the tone and quality if far superior to that.

Action: 7.5

The Seagull S6 as delivered had string action that was a bit high for me. Most manufacturers do this because it is a whole lot easier to lower the strings at the nut and or saddle than raise them.

The nut and saddle are make from Tusq, which is a hybrid plastic or super plastic, which many guitar makers are now turning too.

I would feel that this guitar justifies changing the Tusq out for a quality bone nut and saddle, to try to squeeze out even more and better tones from this quality instrument.

Durability: 8.0

The Seagull S6 is a very well-made instrument for the price and it has solid cedar top and laminated cherry back and sides. The laminated Cherry back and sides is a very stable wood and has little cracking tendency. That being said, plywood guitars are much more damage resistant than their better made cousins - the solid wood instrument.

Please be careful with a sold wood guitar as a relatively minor bump or a sharp rap to the guitar top can cause a minor split to start, whereas a plywood instrument usually will not split from the same abuse.

The Seagull S6 guitar was put together in a humidity controlled atmosphere and you should keep it in that same type of atmosphere to minimize cracking or wood movement. A good humidifier for your room or home and guitar case is essential to minimize repair bills.

Customer Service: 10.0

Be sure to register your guitar. If you treat your guitar right you will be able to keep it in great playing condition for a long time. The biggest enemy of a hollow body acoustical guitar is the lack or the excess of humidity in the air.

Overall Score: 8.0

The Seagull S6 acoustic guitar is a incredible starter guitar for a reasonable price. It will service your needs well into intermediate guitarist territory and the sound of the guitar will improve as you improve.

I really like that this instrument is made in North America and uses wood that is indigenous to Canada. That just sound right, is consistent with green principles and sustainability practices.

With the big body sound of the dreadnought shaped design, this will make both a great flatpicking guitar and fingerstyle guitar.

I love the appearance of American Cherry for the back and sides and the cedar for the top is one of my favorite tonewoods, which really opens up the tone of an instrument rather quickly.

If you are a beginner to intermediate student looking for a great guitar as your first or subsequent guitar, don't pass over the Seagull S6 without giving it serious consideration.
