Sailors Hornpipe - Intermediate Tab PartC:

Bill Keith made this tune popular when he introduced it as his melodic banjo masterpiece when he was playing with Bill Monroe. The melodic banjo method sent a shockwave through the Bluegrass community and Bill was at the center of it.

Not only did his unique take on the banjo win over an entire generation of banjo pickers, it translated into the acoustic guitar as well, and this style has contributed to the core style of Bluegrass flatpicking guitar through Clarence White, Tony Rice, Dan Crary and many more pickers.

Basically this tune is played FAST! In the GuitarPro file I have it at 220 beats per measure, but you will hear it upwards of 280 from some talented musicians.

Sailors Hornpipe - Tips On This Break:

Here is the last half of Sailors Hornpipe break. Make note that the break starts on the 3rd measure in the tablature indicated below.

This break introduces a lot of cross-picking into the tune, as well as more melodic runs. The cross-picking is finished off with a triplet hammer-on pull-off combination.

The first measure of the break is played in the 3rd position by forming a small 3-note barre chord of G on the 3rd fret. Hold the chord throughout the measure and only release it to play the notes of the next measure.

The second measure offers a break from the cross-picking in the first measure. The third measure resumes the cross-picking, but this time it is with the same chord form in the fifth position, forming an A chord. Again, the 4th measure gives you a break from the cross-picking.

The fifth through the end of the break resumes and is very much a repeat of the last half of the Part A portion of the song (refer to Sailors Hornpipe Part A). To visit the third lesson, go to Sailors Hornpipe Part B).

Have fun with this tune and be sure to listen to other artists play it - be sure to listen to Bill Keith's version and you will hear the roots of this melodic tune and what made it so popular.
