Sailors Hornpipe - Intermediate Flatpick Guitar Tab PartB
Sailors Hornpipe - Intermediate Tab - Second Lesson for this song which will give you an intermediate level flatpicking break.
Bill Keith made this tune popular when he introduced it as his melodic banjo masterpiece when he was playing with Bill Monroe. The melodic banjo method sent a shockwave through the Bluegrass community and Bill was at the center of it.
Not only did his unique take on the banjo win over an entire generation of banjo pickers, it translated into the acoustic guitar as well, and this style has contributed to the core style of Bluegrass flatpicking guitar through Clarence White, Tony Rice, Dan Crary and many more pickers.
Basically this tune is played FAST! In the GuitarPro file I have it at 220 beats per measure, but you will hear it upwards of 280 from some talented musicians.
This lesson looks at a variation to to first half of the song. What we do is take the basics that were used in the first lesson and change them out with various note passages.
This will give you another break that you can play for this tune to bring additional color to your playing style.
Watch your down-up pattern for your right hand picking pattern. This is of utmost importance since this song is played so fast.
Also, to get this break to sound as smooth and polished as possible, keep your left hand fingers planted wherever possible and let the open strings ring through the fingered notes - this will contribute to the melodic sound that Bill obtained on the banjo.
One last possible hiccup for you is the triplet hammer-on pull-off towards the end of the break. Work on this very slowly and when you master it, this should be indistinguishable from a picked triplet.
So that's It- Sailors Hornpipe Intermediate Tab - PartB. We will finish up this song next time with the second half of the song with it's own set of variations so you can play this fiddle tune through 2 times with 2 different variations. All at lightening speed of course.
Have fun with this tune and be sure to listen to other artists play it - be sure to listen to Bill Keith's version and you will hear the roots of this melodic tune and what made it so popular.
