Jose Ramirez S1 Rodriguez C Classical Guitar

Featuring a carefully chosen, solid Canadian cedar top and laminated Indian Rosewood back and sides, the Rodriguez Model C Classical Guitar is a beauty to behold and play.

The headstock is Indian rosewood, the neck is Honduras Cedar reinforced with Ebony, and the fingerboard is ebony. Gold-plated tuners and Silver-plated frets are installed to last a lifetime.

The body binding and wood rosette are exquisite. The Rodriguez C Guitar is handcrafted and glued to create precise balances. From the invisible careful sanding, even inside the body, that ensures the finished instrument's purity of tone, to the beautifully unique rosette inlays around the soundhole and on the back of the neck, each classical guitar is a credit to its luthier and worthy of being handed down from one generation to another.

The tone, resonance and beauty of fine guitars are all dependent upon the wood from which they are made. The wood used in the construction of Rodriguez guitars is carefully chosen and aged to guarantee the highest quality.

No wood is purchased before the tree has been cut down, and at least 2 years must elapse before the tree is turned into lumber. The wood has to be well cut from the log. The grain must be close and absolutely vertical. The shop is totally free from humidity.

Features: 7.5

The Rodriguez C guitar has a quality solid Canadian Cedar top and, provides a remarkable clear tone for a guitar with laminated wood back and sides. The braces inside the guitar are carefully sanded and very smooth to the touch, which is another feature you seldom see in a guitar in this price range.

The grain of the Cedar top is very fine and vertical, which contributes to the fine sound you get from this guitar.

The wood mosaic rosette is beautifully done and provides a quality handmade classical guitar persona to this well-crafted instrument.

Sound Production: 7.0

The combination of Canadian Cedar top and the care exhibited in the internal bracing used in the Rodriguez C guitar give it good character and the notes played in the lower register are quite good. The notes played in the higher registers are a quite thin, which is something that I would expect with a guitar with laminated back and sides.

Action: 8.0

The Rodriguez C guitar that I played was very good, but slightly high in action. This is quite often the case from Spanish luthier's as they DO send the guitars out with higher action. I would suspect this would be because it is easy to lower action, but a much more difficult to raise action on a Classical Guitar.

Durability: 8.0

All classical guitars are quite fragile and should not be abused, but this guitar is made in a shop that is free of humidity and that will help guard against cracks due to poor humidity control. With this as well as any quality guitar, insure that humidity is kept as constant as possible with humidifiers in the winter and de-humidifiers in the summer. Abuse with this as well as any guitar will definitely ruin it, so handle it with care.

The neck is of the Rodriguez C is constructed of Honduras Cedar, which is very stiff and tough. Also, the neck is reinforced with (2) Ebony strips on the underside of the fingerboard, which eliminate neck movement.

Be sure to read the following article on care for your instrument: Guitar Humidity Control. It addresses climatic conditions you should consider with the purchase of a guitar with solid wood.

Overall Score: 8.1

While the Rodriguez C is on the top end of beginner guitars, it still does not posses the qualities to be a concert quality guitar. You will find that the voice will be too weak and the notes up the neck do not come through strong enough either.

That being said, it does not mean that this is not a quality guitar for the advanced beginner or the dedicated intermediate classical guitar player. It certainly is a great guitar, has incredible sound and intonation in this price range.

What is the difference between C and the C1? Well, materials and specs match almost exactly. The quality of construction is the only thing left to consider. This guitar does sound and play somewhat better than the C1, but does not match the quality or sound of the FC or CC for that matter.

I would highly recommend the Rodriguez C guitar to the beginning guitar student or small child, but is a bit on the pricey side. This may be more of a transitional guitar
