Fingerstyle Guitar Lessons - Precious Memories Tab PartB

This is a great arrangement to kick of your fingerstyle guitar playing. If you are new to the fingerpicking style, you will find this a song that is easy to learn and a great tune to build your more complex arrangements.

The timing is very straight forward and includes no syncopation, that would tend to frustrate a beginner. You certainly can add syncopated note after this arrangement is memorize and you can play it flawlessly.

Precious Memories Tab PartB - Alternating Bass:

About the most basic learning objective for this beginning fingerstyle lesson is to master the alternating bass that continues throughout the melody. You will notice that the left hand thumb plays the bass "on the beat" very consistently, even through the chord changes. As you progress to more syncopated melody lines, the bass can be played slightly "off-beat", to give the song some interest - but this is a more advanced technique and should not be attempted here until you at least master this arrangement by playing it up to speed and without any hesitation in the timing or mistakes.

Tab Tips for Precious Memories Tab PartB:

This is the Chorus of the song Precious Memories. Again quite simple, but you will find a few hiccups that you will have to deal with on this song. The alternating bass that we discussed on the first or PartA portion of this lesson continues through the PartB of this song. Be sure to concentrate on keeping this bass string very consistent and 'on-the-beat'.

Okay - the hardest part of this lesson is measures 12 and the first half of measure 13. Here you have to catch an E7 chord progression in the 5th position. Get your fingers into positio and be sure to memorize this chord progression as it is used quite often with songs in the key of E Major. Notice on the 2nd beat of the 12th measure there is a 3-note chord. This chord is just a variation of the E7 you see in the diagram. You achieve it by lifting up your 4th finger on the first string and playing the string as an open "E" or open 1st string.

Secondly, to keep the alternating bass going the 3rd note of the 12th fret is a "B" note that is played on the 7th fret of the 6th string, with the left had thumb. Yep that is how you do it and again is quite a common strategy for fingerstyle guitar. This takes a bit of practice and stretching with the thumb, but once you can do it, pat yourself on the back as this is a rather hard fingering for the left hand.

Next, and possibly the hardest, you will need to keep the basic chord form for the E7 in the 5th position and catch the G# note on the 4th fret of the 1st string, and then immediately play it as an open "E" or open first string on the 2nd beat of the 13th fret.

You finally get some relief in the bass run in the last half of the 13th measure. The balance of the chorus is basically a repeat of the PartA portion of the song so you should have an easy time of it.
