New River Train Beginner Tab:

This is one of the first Norman Blake tunes that I learned to Flatpick the acoustic guitar. This tune is true Blake and with the addition of Tony Rice's fluid blues breaks, makes this a great tune for you to add to you song list. This beginner break will give a few challenges but once mastered, and played up to speed you should be able to play it very smoothly.

True Bluegrass InstrumentalsIf you love some of the greatest flatpicking ever, be sure to pick up this album. It combined 2 of the best flatpicker's of all time. The guitar picking is great as are the vocals. You even get a good dose of Norman's Mandolin in some of the songs. Be sure to add Blake and Rice to your bluegrass collection

New Chance Blues, Green Light on the Southern, I'm Not Sayin', Texas Gales, Ridge Road Grave, Monroe's Hornpipe, Last Train from Poor Valley, New River Train, Stoney Point, Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar, Little Beggarman/Gilderoy, The Shipyard Apprentice, Medley: Fiddler's Dram/Whiskey Before Breakfast, I'm Comin' Back But I Don't Know When

The First Break:

New River Train Beginner Tab - The First Break: One of the greatest flatpicking songs of all time is now tabbed out for you in true Norman Blake style. This version of the song borrows from Blake's incredible flatpicking style of using lead notes and chords in a great combination that is very pleasing to listen to and to play.

One of the hardest portions for the beginner will be the last few measures where I have included a long blues break of unrelenting eighth notes, so brush up on your down up strokes and crosspicking technique.

Be sure to play your double notes and triple note chords with authority and a brush-type of stroke. You will note that there are quite a few hammer-ons in this song too, which give you a great way to fill-in certain passages.

The Second Break:

New River Train Intermediate Tab - The Second Break: In this second break to New River Train, we will continue to fill in more of the notes that Norman plays in his version. This will present quite a challenge as now you will combine notes with chord accompaniment along with difficult bass runs. Hold on for this one as you will sound like a true Norman Blake expert if you can nail this one!

Memorize Your Ultimate Guitar Tab:

I would recommend that you memorize each song here. What is the easiest way to do this? The easiest way to memorize a song is to memorize one short section or one measure at a time. Master each small section prior you move on to the next measure. When a new section or measure is committed to memory and mastered, return to the novice and play the entire piece, including the new section. Don't continue until it is mastered.

Once the entire piece is memorized, play it over several times more to burn it into your memory.
