Learning The Guitar - Fingerstyle Licks 5

Picking up a lick for fingerstyle guitar always gives a guitar player a lift. If you hear something that really catches your ear, you want to be able to replicate it and that is what learning the guitar does to us, we always want more!

This series in Learning the Guitar Licks, are little passages that I have picked up over the years from both fellow players and the pros.

Some of them only sound good when played up-to-speed so don't discount them until you can do that. You should also play them up to speed in the Guitar Pro file so you can get an idea of what they sound like, although it is hard to capture the exact sound in a software program - it comes pretty darn close.

Most of these licks are take-offs from Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and Merle Travis, to me the kings of fingerstyle guitar and they are brought to you for this Learning the Guitar Series.

I have kept each of these lesson licks short and to the point for a reason. It is very easy to get overwhelmed with playing lick and therefore you will not practice them properly. Most of the licks are 2 measures long, with the occasionally longer lick being thrown in for good measure.

Fingerstyle Licks typically take a lot of energy to play properly and they can really show off your guitar abilities. Most guitar players store them away by memorizing them and you can then 'pull them out' as needed.

One thing you should strive to do is to keep your finger movement on your left hand to a minimum. Hold like note fingers in place, while switching other fingers. This serves to 'anchor' your hand and gives you greater speed and smoothness.

Also if you do need to move fingers, keep the movement as low to the strings as you can. Do it in slow motion and see how minimal you can keep your finger movements.

Learning The Guitar - Fingerstyle Licks 5 - How To Play Them

Play these tabs very slowly and follow along with the associated Guitar Pro file in "Practice Mode". This will allow you to start very slowly and then each time through you can increase the speed by a increment that you select in the file.

This lick starts out with a bass run. You can choose to play this bass run or not. In other words it is optional.

This lick also utilizes the commonly known chord progressions of 'Circle of Fifths'. We will deal with this term and how to play them in a future article. But for right now, you play the circle of fifths in the key of C Major. They consist of the D7 chord and the A7th chord.

So the circle goes something like this: A7, D7, G7, C. When you play this you will get accustomed to the sound and how to play them in different keys.

One other thing I'd like to talk to you about and that occurs toward the end of the lick. I usually catch the F note on the 6th string with the left hand thumb. This is a common method used by country artists and I believe it is very applicable here as it eliminates the need to play a partial bar chord with the first finger.

Even though this is very possible, the strings of an acoustic guitar, especially the 5th and 6th strings, near the nut are quite difficult to press down and hold clearly in these difficult fingerstyle passages. You choose though. If you prefer to play with the first finger and you have the strength to do it, go for it.

Learning The Guitar - Fingerstyle Licks 5 - Read Those Tab Notes:

Just as a fine fingerstyle teacher would do, I have noted the nuances of the difficult areas of the licks. Sometimes I have to note every note in the tab because there are so many turn-around's, pull-offs, hammer-ons, bends etc.!

The most important lesson in this lick is again to hold your left hand chord forms as long as possible. Position your fingers at the beginning of the chord change and hold them for the duration of the chord.

Learning the Guitar Fingerstyle Licks 5 - C Major Chords Consist of the following:

Relative Key of AMinor Consist of the Following:
