Guitar Plans Overview:

If you are interested in building an acoustic guitar or a classical guitar, we probably have a plan for you.

Our extensive library of plans keeps on growing and we offer a wide selection for you to choose from.

David, who is responsible for the design and documentation of these plans has been involved in guitar building, repair and teaching the guitar for over 40 years and has developed a real sense for what the luthier requires in a great plan.

Guitar Plans Based In Architecture:

David is also a registered architect and has owned and run his architectural firm since 1982. He specialized is all forms of commercial work and has worked with fortune 500 companies on award-winning designs

His architectural skills also translate to the CAD systems, with which he as dominated this market since 1988, when he first decided to take the plunge into electronic documentation.

He has given classes and seminars on working efficiently with CAD systems and his plans are held in the highest regard.

His talent for both music and CAD have led him to the crossroads of bringing the best documented plans for guitar builders that are available in today's market.

You will find that these full sized plans are well documents with detail, notes and dimensions that will arm you with the necessary detail to build some great guitars.

Designing and documenting a guitar is not all that different from a building or a home. All it involves is translating what is in the minds eye to paper.

Guitar Plans - The Specialized Tools:

Furthermore, since the trade of lutherie is such a specialized trade, he has also chosen to document many of the specialized tools that he has used to make the guitar building process as smooth and effortless as possible.

Therefore you will find plans documenting the bending process, guitar forms, work boards, gluing jigs and many other assorted gadgets that will assist you in your guitar building aspirations.

The Future of Guitar Plans:

For now, the plans have mainly focused on the acoustic guitar and classical guitar markets, along with the forms, tools and jigs that accessorize them. There are plans to expand into the electric guitar market and other instruments such as ukulele, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, violin and other stringed instruments.

Grand Concert Classical Guitar Plans

All of these plans are based on the Concert Sized classical guitar that was first introduced by the great luthier Antonio De Torres back in the 1850's.

These guitars all have a very well balanced volume and tone and are truly designed for the concert hall.

Grand Auditorium 12-String Guitar Plans

Grand Auditorium 12-String: Taylor Guitars introduced their Grand Auditorium guitar several years back and this plan has similar characteristic to their design.

Also, you will find that the Martin J series is very close to this footprint. These are big-voiced guitars that can be greatly enhances by varying the tonewood that is selected for the back and sides. The 12-String variation here has beefed-up structural bracing to handle the extra tension of 12 strings vs. 6.

Grand Symphony 12-String Guitar Plans

Grand Symphony 12-String: The uniqueness of the Grand Symphony 6-String guitar is brought to the 12-string guitar with this plan.

Besides the striking body shape, the GS guitar features a forward-shifted bracing pattern, give this guitar a good "punch" of a tone and excellent volume that is well balanced. This is one of my favorite guitars.

The Jumbo, JM or J200 12-String Guitar Plans

Jumbo 12: This is about the biggest bodied acoustic guitar you will find. Martin, Taylor and Gibson all have their versions on this great guitar.

Probably it is most popularized by the Granddaddy of them all the Gibson J200. Again, the tone can be greatly colored by wood selection from warm with a Walnut to loud and bright with the Rosewoods. The 12-String variation here has beefed-up structural bracing to handle the extra tension of 12 strings vs. 6.

The Dreadnought 12-String Guitar Plans

Dreadnought 12: The Dreadnought 6-String Guitar is the most popular guitar shape of all time and now you can build your own 12-String version of this great well-balanced, big voiced, big bodied guitar with our detailed plans.

This plan is very similar to our 6-string plan with the appropriate adjustments to bracing to make it compatable with the additional tension from the 12 strings.

The Dreadnought

Dreadnought: This was the guitar that started it all for the steel string guitar. It was developed by the C.F. Martin Company in 1931 and was named after a World War I class of battleships from the British Navy called Dreadnoughts.

This shape is the premier flatpicking and fingerstyle guitar combination.

000 Parlor or Concert Guitar Plans

000 Concert: This guitar is based on the small-bodied Martin 000 and is a great flatpicking or fingerstyle guitar with a very balanced tone.

J45 Guitar Plans

J45: This great guitar was first introduced by Gibson in the 1940's as their response to the Martin line of dreadnought guitars. It is also knows at the "round-shouldered" gibson and is a guitar for all genres including rhythm, flatpicking and fingerstyle.

This also is a good flatpick guitar, but it really excels as a great fingerstyle guitar with great tone balance and smaller dimensions.

HD-28VS Guitar Plans

HD-28VS: Similar to the 000-28VS but a larger body style and soundhole and bracing is shifted forward. It also has the great vintage features as well such as: Prism Bridge, Vee neck/headpiece design and scalloped bracing.

This is a good flatpick guitar, but it really excels as a great fingerstyle guitar with great tone balance. The body size most closely replicates the J45 round shoulder.

Grand Symphony 6-String Guitar Plans

Grand Symphony 6-String: Full sized, very detailed plans similar to a Taylor GS 6 String guitar. It Has a 14 fret neck with a 4 3/4" deep body at the deepest section. These plans are very detailed and even include a description of materials, construction tips and techniques and construction specifications overview

Besides the striking body shape, the GS guitar features a forward-shifted bracing pattern, give this guitar a good "punch" of a tone and excellent volume that is well balanced. This is one of my favorite guitars.

Plans Coming Soon:

0-Concert: '0' sized body, similar in specs to the 0-28VS but standard peghead design and standard bracing. This guitar specs and will include a belly bridge, 14-fret neck, standard tuning machines and headstock, standard "X" bracing with a slightly shorter scale of 24.9" Body size will be: 19.125" x 13.5" x 4.05"

00-Concert: '00' sized body but a bit more body volume that the "0-28VS" so the bass response will be just a bit bigger. Specs on this guitar include: Belly Bridge, standard tuning machines and headstock, and standard "X" bracing. Scale is the same as the "0" at 24.9". Body dimensions: 19.625" x 14.125" x 4.05"
