History speaks for itself. The Gibson ES 335 Dot is one of the most important guitars of all time. Right from its introduction in 1958 as the world’s first semi-hollowbody electric guitar it has been a mainstay of players eager to balance the gorgeous, round, mellow tones perfect for jazz and blues with the edge and sustain of a full-blooded solidbody.
Today the Gibson Custom Shop creates exacting duplicates of the Gibson ES 335 Dot as it first left the Kalamazoo plant in 1958. That year just 267 were built, but the original vintage 335s grew steadily in popularity, peaking in 1967 thanks largely to Eric Clapton’s high-profile use of a cherry ES-335 in the band Cream. The Custom Shop ES-335 is available with many finish options, reflecting the color choices that have evolved over the model’s 50-year history.
In Satin finish, trans black and cherry colors are available, with a plain maple top, back, and rims. Ebony is available only in plain maple on the Gibson ES 335 Dot. With the figured maple top, back, and rims option, cherry, tri-burst, antique natural, light burst, and vintage sunburst colors are available. Wine red, trans brown, Beale Street Blue, and cinnamon burst finishes are also available in limited quantities, along with gold hardware, for figured and for plain maple models.
Regardless of color, the Gibson ES 335 Dot retains its classic proportions: 16 1/2-inches wide, 20-inches long, and 1 3/4-inches deep. The neck is one-piece mahogany beneath a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearloid inlays and a single-ply binding. Additionally, there’s single-ply binding on the top and back.

The Gibson ES 335 Dot is one of the best guitars available in the semi-hollow body guitar market. It was the original hollow body electric and continues in its popularity today.
This guitar is a popular choice for rock musicians like Eric Claption as well as many jazz musicians person pick. It posesses warm and mellow tones which are perfect for playing jazz or the blues and yet has the versatility to play the screaming highs required by rockers.
With exception of the sunburst finish, it is a rather understated guitar free from any glitz or unnecessary ornamentation, which is what I prefer in a guitar.
I would prefer a solid Ebony fingerboard to the Rosewood. Ebony is denser, smoother and faster - far more resistant to fingernail gouges.
The pickups are great and have all the versatility you will need, no mater what genera you play. There is a simple 3-way switch which operated the 2 pickups.
This guitar is a jazz specializist. It has a beautiful, modern CLEAN sound that is really pure through a good cleam amp. Don't sell it short for blues, country or rock either, as it has great versatility.
The tones are very clean with good sustain. The Gibson ES 335 Custom, truely has it's own sound and guitarists that crave that sould cannot do without it. I lov the sound that the 335 can produce. Lucily the masters in the Gibson Custom Shop have gone back to their guitar making "roots" in the production of thier custom guitar line, as the Gibson ES 335 Dot is very reminicent of the original's.
If you are looking for that rare Gibson ES 335 Custom sound, then this guitar is about your only choice. The Gibson ES 335 Custom electric guitar has been a mainstay of players eager to balance the gorgeous, round, mellow tones perfect for jazz and blues with the edge and sustain of a full-blooded solidbody
The finish of the guitar that I reviewed was flawless. As this guitar comes right out of the custom shop, there is extra special care given to all aspects of the guitar including a georgous finsis, perfect action and impecable sound.
Action of the guitar I tried was perfect for my style of playing - I personally prefer a zero fret installation so the nut action is not compromized in any way, but the Custom Department has paid close attention the this aspect and their guitars are incredible to play.
Although it is a semi hollow body the guitar has a solid feel to it and robust set up. All electronics work very well. This guitar is utterly dependable, build like the proverbial tank. I only keep guiatrs I can depend on and never use a back up and I feel this is such a guitar
