Fender Standard Stratocaster, manufactured by Fender's subsidiary Squier. Very nice guitar for the money. Only $380.00 list and you should be able to find a street price of about $230.00
Pretty much a basic guitar and you will likely have to spend a little bit of bench time with it. Likely problems will be very minor such as a bit of fret polishing, and some other possible touchup of the finish.
To get this guitar to play the way you desire, you will need to adjust the action and also adjust the intonation or you won't be able to keep it in tune. Again minor problems, easily repaired and adjusted. Also refer to my articles on action adjustment and intonation.
The 3 Ainico Magnet Single-Coil Pickups put out a nice "Strat" sound. Not as good as the original, but close enough for a guitar in this price range.
The Fender Standard Stratocaster Squier plays fairly nicely as delivered, but most instruments can be improved dramatically with some time on the bench. These are all adjustments you can make yourself. The hardest operation and certainly the fussiest is filing the action on the nut. Intonation is easily handled with the compensation bridge adjustment.
The Fender Standard Stratocaster appears as though it will hold up quite well. The finish is very durable and the tuners see quite solid without play.

This is a great starter guitar for those of you interested in electric guitars. Playability is a minor problem, but can be easily handled with a little bit of "bench" time.
Although available in both Rosewood or Maple, the Maple just seems more fitting for a Fender guitar, even though this one is manufactured outside the US. I really like the color variations available and the overall fit and finish is really quite good.
The Fender Standard Stratocaster Squier pickups perform flawlessly and gives this guitar great sound and versatility. The sound is clean and great for rock and rockabilly and very able to handle those difficult licks. If you are a beginning music student consider the Fender Standard Stratocaster Squier - you won't be disappointed.
