Big Sandy River Intermediate Tab PartA - Acoustic Guitar Lesson
Give this classic flatpicking guitar tune a try. I is great for boosting your speed and agility on the guitar fretboard
Big Sandy River is another one of those songs you need to know if you plan of doing some parking lot picking - it will be expected of you.
This arrangement is very cool in that it introduces you to some double stops (play 2 notes at one time) in several sections of the break.
Big Sandy is also another song that has an unrelenting string of eighth notes, giving your right hand a big challenge, and it certainly gives you a good workout - especially if you play it up-to-speed, which is about 230 beats per minute.
This portion of the break (Part A), kicks off with 2 pick-up notes in the first measure. Also it gets right into the double stop section in the second measure. Fingering on these double stops is essential, so go very slow and memorize it.
Note the unorthodox placement of the 2nd finger of the left hand on the first note of the 3rd measure. This is a result, and carry-over, from the last double stop fingering. It is the easiest way to finger this note otherwise you will be funbling around to place your 3rd finger on this D note.
This song is mainly played in the first position and there is a considerable use of the LH fourth finger, so you will need to strengthen it if needed.
Plenty of cross-picking on this one too, so brush up on that technique and pay special attention to the down-up pick direction indicated just above the TAB notes.
Just a reminder that for the first position your LH finger numbers and fret numbers correspond - i.e. 1st finger plays 1st fret, 2nd finger plays 2nd fret and so on....
Be sure to download the GuitarPro file at the bottom of the article, so you can build your speed slowly and smoothly with the Speed Trainer portion of the program.
Also, you can add a track for rhythm chords so you can have your own auto-rhythm to play along with.
One more part to go on this song, which will give you a typical A-B fiddle tune.
If you would like the Guitar Pro File for this break, which is very faithful to the song and will allow you to make your own unique break, play along with this break, and give you the speed training option, you can load it here: Big Sandy River Intermediate Tab PartA, Guitar Pro File.
