The Alvarez AF60S has a solid Sitka Spruce top and Mahogany laminated sides and back. You look inside the guitar and you can tell it is laminated due to the different grain pattern of the wood.I really like the plain look on the fingerboard with no position dots except for the single dot at the 12th Fret. Fingerboard navigation positioning is still very easy with the position dots located on the edge of the fingerboard with black dots in the white plastic binding.
Tuners are chrome plated die cast construction and seem to be very good as they were solid and smooth, without any play.
Personally I don't like stained Rosewood for the fingerboard. I prefer honesty of materials and if you use Rosewood, make it look Rosewood - not Ebony.
I love the Alvarez AF60S Pearl Inlay on the headstock. Also the abalone soundhole trim adds a touch of class, especially one in this price range.
After playing the Alvarez AF60S for a while, I was really pleased with the sound that it puts out. It still amazes me the great strides these Japanese companies have made over the past few decades.
Again, I would attribute the sound production of the Alvarez AF60S to the solid Spruce top that this guitar has, since the top is the major sound production element.
The action of the Alvarez AF60S was a bit too high for my taste. I prefer lower action for lead playing and would bench it to lower the string action more to my liking.
The neck was straight and appeared to have the correct amount of relief to allow the strings to be lowered a bit.
Being a laminated wood guitar, it is very well built.Even though the back is laminated, it does have bracing similar to a solid wood guitar, which I do like.
The only cracking you will have to worry about is on the solid wood top and possibly the neck. Keep your guitar humidified though.
Alvarez is committed to providing you with a wide range of guitars that offer superior tone and playability and represent unusually high value, regardless of price range. Alvarez AF60S Acoustic Guitar
Alvarez AF60S acoustic guitar has a solid spruce top with mahogany back and sides. A bound fretboard and headstock, multi-ply top binding, and pearloid rosette add up to one sweet-looking flattop.
And it sounds as good as it looks with bold, crisp tone from the solid spruce top mellowed by mahogany back and sides. Nickel die-cast tuners are great accents for the rosewood headstock veneer with traditional Alvarez inlay.
The beautiful gloss finish of the Alvarez AF60S is set off by gold tuners plus the abalone dots and rosette. This is an ideal dreadnought guitar for those who want to do some serious flatpicking.
With a street price of about $330.00 this guitar is definitely a "great deal" and one that I would not hesitate in recommending for the beginner, advanced beginner, up through intermediate player.
Bottom line: The Alvarez Af60S is a guitar that I would consider upgrading with the following improvements:
Ebony Bridge Pins
